Coronado Bridge from Tidelands

Went over to Coronado yesterday. It was a beautiful day for painting and for playing in the (little) waves.

Penasquitos Preserve

On good advice, I modified this one a bit. Here's the updated version:

I did this one Friday afternoon. It is the entrance to Penasquitos Preserve- a popular hiking and mountain biking area. I had been here painting once before and really enjoyed the views. Finally made my way back.

Lake Kumeyaay

This is Friday morning's attempt. The lake was nice but we were told by Rangers that it is slowing drying up and will eventually become a wetlands area. So, I'll be back and capture it while it's around.

Famosa Slough Heron

I'm experimenting a bit with my painting process- trying to get values down better. So with this one I did a grayscale underpainting in acrylics, then applied oils over the top. I like what it does- makes it easier to stick with the value plan and not break up the masses too much.

Here's the black and white underpainting.

Near Mission Trails Dam

Here's the one from the dam area of Mission Trails. I went there with the Sage Group last Friday. No touchups (yet) on this- but I'm not 100% satisfied with it. Not sure what it is- values I think.

It was such a hot day out there. We tried to get on the river early but I set up right in the sun for this spot. There are a lot of good references in this area- I'll be going back for sure.

La Jolla Viewpoint

Went back to Mission Trails yesterday for a hot morning of painting. Haven't taken a pic of it yet. However, today I did this one overlooking La Jolla.

Mission Trails 2

I met up with Christina and Betty from the Sage Group today out at Mission Trails. We painted over by the visitors center. The colors were really vibrant even though we haven't had much rain.

What a great place that is.

Island Dinghy Landing

We went to Shelter Island the other day. The kids loved playing in the water while I painted the dinghy landing with the city in the background.

WIP- Koi Pond I or Sharks and Minnows

I took several photos the other day in and around Balboa Park. The kids loved the koi pond near the Botanical Garden. There were several kids playing 'Sharks and Minnows'. I took pics as I was working on this one.

Santa Fe WIP- work in progress

This was done during Plein Air NM's Workshop Week with Doug Higgins. I had a really good time- he's quite a character. His work can be seen here. (click to see)

Lots more to be done on this one. I only got as far as the block-in. We mostly watched Doug do an extended demo- between rainstorms, that is.

Randall Davey Preserve

These were done during Plein Air New Mexico's workshop week. Lorenzo Chavez was the instructor on this day. He was really a wonderful teacher. His work can be seen here. (click to see)
